“Our life is frittered away by detail…simplify, simplify.” – Henry David Thoreau
Some of you may have been hearing the buzz around the studio about our Metcon classes, and if you haven’t you might be wondering if Metcon is some new comicon-esque event where people dress up like horses or something. Well, it isn’t a horse party…so what is it?
Metcon is an abbreviation for metabolic conditioning, which is a training method that involves completing structural and compound exercises with little rest in between in an effort to maximize calorie burn and increase metabolic rate during (and after) workouts. I know, I know perhaps not quite as fun as a comicon horse party…or is it?
Being recently introduced to the format myself, I must say it was challenging and surprisingly fun! Not only does it fly by, but the simple moves completed with less rest time each round feels sort of like a game. You’re challenging yourself along with your classmates and it get’s harder each round…almost like that game Simon but you’re working your booty not your brain.
Here is the best news, this energizing, booty-rockin’ workout is also really awesome for you.
Let me take a moment to break it down for you – *puts on lab coat and grabs laser pointer* – metabolism simply refers to how we break down food for energy. Everything we consume must be broken down and distributed to be used as energy for the body. There are multiple metabolic systems at play which also work together simultaneously. Without going into too much crazy detail, the purpose of metabolic conditioning is to maximize the efficiency of a particular energy system to perform better for you.
In a nutshell, with the right work to rest ratio you’ll get more out of the effort you’re putting in! If your eyebrows aren’t already raised, let me list some more tasty benefits of a metcon workout.
- Increase of caloric burn that continues after the workout is finished (like, hours or even days!)
- Can build muscle as well as a leaner physique
- Improves cardiovascular capacity
- Teaches metabolism to function better and work faster to burn more adipose (fat) tissue at rest
- Improves hormonal profile
- Preserves muscle you’ve already built
- Can be performed with zero equipment
- Quick and intense resulting in more free time outside the gym
