The community at Honest is one of our greatest strengths! But there’s so much we don’t get to talk about in-between burpees, pull ups, & box jumps. Take this chance to get to know one of Honest’s cutest couples – Kelsey & Adam! Keep up with Kelsey on instagram @ampersand_home!
And come see for yourself how much fun the crew at Honest really is! Join us for a FREE week of group training classes.
1. How long have you been working out at Honest? How did you get started?
Kelsey: Almost three years! I googled “Portland Boot Camps” years ago and stumbled upon Paisley’s newsletter, but we lived on the opposite end of town so I never went to the gym. Fast-forward 3 years are we’re now living blocks away. I signed up for the FREE WEEK offer and fell in love. Then I think Adam got tired of listening to me brag about how strong I was so a year later he signed up.
2. Do you have any advice for someone who is new at Honest? Or thinking about a membership?
Kelsey: Start slow and be nice to yourself. Listen to your body and before you know it, you’ll be squat thrusting twice the weight you could a year ago. Oh, and you’ll never regret it!
Adam: Don’t feel intimidated to start because there’s always an intensity option that will be right for you, and no one judges at this gym.
3. What is your favorite class at Honest or type of work-out? Do you work out together?
Kelsey: STRENGTH! And Core & Mobility.
Adam: Tuesday – Spin & Strength. It’s a pretty badass workout.
And yes – we work out together (gross) when our work schedules allow it. We often meet at the gym at 8am after Adam has been on a 24hr shift. I wouldn’t let him kiss me good morning in front of my gym friends until like last month.
4. How do you stay motivated?
Adam: By how much better I feel and stronger I’m getting – makes other parts of my life easier so it’s kind of a no-brainer.
Kelsey: My husband has a six pack… No, but for reals – I’ve never been stronger in my life AND I’ve never had this little body pain (back, knee, hip etc.) so that reinforces the routine.
Adam: I also like seeing everyone.
Kelsey: Oh me too!
Adam: Part of the motivation is actually enjoying the class and the instructors
Kelsey: Suck up! Just kidding. We like these people. We go to parties with these people.
5. What keeps you busy in between workouts? Work/Family/Hobbies?
Kelsey: Dogs! We have two rescue pooches that are our babies and we also foster and volunteer with a local all-breed rescue called One Tail at a Time. We even went to Puerto Rico with them this January to help rehabilitate a shelter and we look forward to another relief trip next year. If you’re interested in more information about fostering or to donate to a relief trip, check out the One Tail at a Time site! 🙂
Adam: A lot! Bit by bit we’re renovating our 1940s home – doing as much of it ourselves as we can.
Kelsey: YES! We just finished our kitchen and *oh-lala*! We should have you all over.
Adam: Brewing beer and not doing enough camping or hiking.
Kelsey: Adam is also a Portland Firefighter. And when I’m not snuggling dogs or bugging Adam about starting our next project I’m running my business staging and styling homes.
6. How long have you lived in Portland? Where else have you lived?
Adam: I moved out here 11 years ago for my job with Portland Fire. Before that was three years in Sequoia National Park with the National Park Service. And before that – three years outside of Vegas for the Forest Service. New Jersey born and bred.
Kelsey: October marks 13 years here! Moved out as a young twenty-something with two friends and my tabby cat. All my family still lives back in Colorado where I was born.
7. What is your self-care routine?
Kelsey: Honest + *mostly* clean eating + hot tub soak + one adult beverage + lots of sleep.
Adam: You can also find a foam roller, a lacrosse ball, and a theracane in our front closet. And we try to get away for quick trips when we can – beach or mountain.
8. Is there a food & drink that you couldn’t live without?
Kelsey: Avocados. Or cheese.
Adam: A good IPA, coffee is a close second. Shoot, peanut butter…
Kelsey: You also eat a lot of mayo…
PIZZA! We had pizza at our wedding – we cut that instead of cake. So yeah.
9. What is your idea of the perfect day-off?
Adam: Sleeping in, a pot of coffee in the sun, making breakfast with my wife, going on a long hike in the mountains with the dogs, and hitting a brewery on the way home.
Kelsey: Sleeping in, a boiled bagel with cream cheese, horseback ride, happy hour with husband, take dogs to the park and go to a friend’s for a dinner party.
