October’s Honest Community Standout is…….

It’s time to announce October’s Honest Community Standout! Our standouts are people that are dedicated, consistent and bring a special energy to the studio. Mad props and congratulations are in order for…Alex Harmon!!

Alex was nominated by Trainer Jared who had this to say:

“I picked Alex because he shows up to do the work. When he’s at the gym, I know that Alex is there to give the workout his undivided attention. With the recent addition to his family, it’s even more awesome that Alex is making time to bring it for his workouts! Alex represents the kind of focused and welcoming client who is at the heart of what makes Honest incredible and I’m better for having him in my classes.”

Now let’s get to know the man himself a little better.

Alex What brought you to Honest?

I moved from Austin and was looking to rejoin a gym that provided a lot of what I enjoyed during my time in ATX, which is where I was introduced to small group training and functional exercises. After a brief search online and reading up on reviews, I was happy to have found Honest and popped my head in one day to learn more. The material on the website and the first meeting with Paisley confirmed this was the place for me.

What were your initial fitness and health goals?

I had not been working out or doing anything active for close to a year while in a transitional living situation so I was eager to shed about 15 lbs and get back to “feeling fit” again. I remember telling Paisley I hit my goal about 5 months into my membership.

How long have you been training at Honest?

I’ve been at Honest since April 2015.

How often do you train?

My wife and I just had our first child 5+ months ago so it’s naturally changed my schedule and availability. I’m trying to come twice a week and eventually get back to the 4-5 trainings per week schedule from before.

What changes have you noticed since you started working out at Honest? (Both physically and mentally)

The biggest change has been related to my sense of confidence and general state of mind. I’m more positive and my self-esteem has been given a boost. Physically I feel more capable and have greater energy to tackle my day, my work, and my new responsibilities as a father.

What motivates you during a particularly tough workout?

A few things actually…first, the group dynamic helps and seeing others going through the same workout gives me a push to keep up and hang in there i.e. if they can do it, I can do it. Second, when I’m being pushed and I’m feeling the burn or getting gassed, I know I’m really giving it my all and that’s where the pay off is – so I like knowing I’m putting in an honest workout and not cheating myself. Finally, and maybe for me the most helpful, it’s the encouragement and motivation from the training staff. I feel more engaged and hustle a little more when someone is giving me a few words, challenging me, or paying attention in general. I’m toast if it’s quiet and the trainer isn’t actively involved. A good music mix doesn’t hurt either.

What is your favorite thing about working out at Honest?

Definitely the sense of comfort once I step inside the studio. I know the place is going to be clean, the staff will be engaged and prepared, the class will start and end on time, and the rest of the class will be made up of friendly people ready to get their sweat on. I love knowing I’m going to be taken care of and my needs are going to be met.

What are your long term fitness and health goals?

I’d love to stay under my target weight and be able to get through a workout giving 100% and feeling like I could go another 30 minutes. If I can be a fit and healthy 40-something papa I’ll be happy.

What advice do you have for other Honest clients to help them get the most out of the experience?

Keep an open mind to the approach the staff takes and communicate if something isn’t working for you. I’d also encourage others to push their boundaries and ask for support when they need it.

What is your favorite fitness move or exercise?

I like anything that requires balance because it forces me to really focus and concentrate. It can also be humbling and point out areas for improvement. I do like the triple crusher (see Jared) and wall-ball because it’s a cardio and strength double whammy.

What is a fitness move or exercise that really challenges you?

Hollow hold and most of the plank exercises really kick my butt. It doesn’t take long for me to get the shakes. Anything that works the lower back too – lots of issues to fix.

What is something interesting about you that most people don’t know?

I grew up on 90s hip hop and love what DJs can do with that material. I have turntables and DJ software (now in storage) and once made a mix tape for a friend. I’m a complete amateur and the technical quality was garbage but I had fun doing it and envy the pros who are artists in that space. I’m also a cut throat board game player and can’t play anything “just for fun.”
