My favorite part about our Honest blog are the people we get to feature. I love introducing the people that make our little gym so awesome! This blog, and the few that will follow, will highlight some of my favorite women who own businesses in Portland. These women are strong, brave, hardworking, and live an intentional life doing the things they love!
First to be featured is Julia GaRey. Julia owns a small women’s tailoring boutique and design studio right down the street from Honest! 4225 NE FREMONT to be exact 🙂
Julia GaRey has always loved creating by taking raw elements and turning them into something beautiful and functional. After picking up the sewing bug in high school, she attended Oregon State University and graduated with honors in Apparel Design and Merchandise Management. With a desire to create clothing that fit real women, not the standard that most companies mass produce for, she went to work in bridal alterations, where she learned fitting techniques while observing real body proportions. With this platform, she also obtained a skill set for impeccable sewing and construction. In 2009, she launched her own namesake label of two spring jackets, from the depths of her own basement.
In 2012, GaRey opened up Cloth and Canvas to showcase her own designs and those of other talented Portland designers. Midway through the year, after doing awkward alteration fittings amongst clothing racks, she realized she needed to change her business model to keep up with the alteration demand. In January 2013, Silhouette, a women’s tailoring boutique and design studio, was born; Portland rejoiced.
Clothing should make you feel more beautiful and confident. Sometimes all you need to turn a frumpy look into a stunning ensemble is a little nip here and tuck there. At Silhouette, we strive to have you looking your best, whether it’s for a job interview or your wedding day.
How long have you lived in PDX? What is your favorite part of living in Portland, OR?
I’ve lived in Portland since 2008. I love how accessible it is. I can walk to work and New Seasons, along with Alberta St. and Fremont St. It’s amazing having so much so close. And with that comes a great community. You really get to know the people in places you shop and visit most.
What is your favorite way to workout/train/move?
I love taking classes like circuit training and vinyasa yoga.
Why is working out so important to you?
It’s important to take time for yourself. For the few hours a week I get to work out, I’m not thinking about work or errands or what to make for dinner. I’m just focusing on me and my well being. Plus, it’s fun to be strong!
What 1 food and 1 beverage could you not live without?
Food is hard because I really love food. I want to say pasta, but then there is salmon and tacos and chocolate… Beverage is easy: COFFEE!
What is your biggest outlet for your creative expression?
I really get my creativity out by sewing and designing for the store and for our clients.
Thanks for sharing, Julia!
