Who Needs a Pep Talk?

Hey you, come over here and take a knee, I want to talk to you for a minute.

I know sometimes you feel like you want to give up. Sometimes you’d rather just stay home and gorge on your favorite comfort food as you lie motionless on your couch. That would be so easy and so satisfying…for a moment.

Then you find yourself feeling gluttonous and guilty. You lecture yourself for being weak and overindulgent. You were so strict and compliant all week and now you’ve dropped the ball. Might as well give up right?

Not so fast.

Those moments when you struggle are the moments that define you. Sure you took a couple steps back, but life is a tango my friend. You will step back again and again but you will also step forward. You will dance through this crazy, twisted life full of highs and lows and triumphs and tragedies.

Because life happens…and thank goodness it does.

Those challenging moments are where it all counts. Stop trying to be infallible. Perfect is so boring. Allow yourself to screw up and then just get back on track. Embrace the fact that you are human and then turn the next page.

You don’t have to be a hero. You don’t have to be the best or the fastest or the strongest. You don’t have to achieve your ideal weight. You don’t have to have a flat stomach. You don’t have to be loved by everyone.

I want to let you in on a little secret.

You are already good enough right now.

Yes even though you might be a little more squishy than you are toned.  Yes even though you have an affinity for cheesecake or wine or french fries. Yes even though you’re a complete grump in the mornings and you don’t meditate every day like you mean to. Yes even though you occasionally screw up as a mother or father or friend or son or daughter or brother or sister or coworker. Yes even though you haven’t accomplished all the things you’d like to.

You. Are. Amazing.

All you ever have to do in life is try your best. Just show up. When you show up (for your workouts, for your loved ones, for your life) and you keep showing up consistently…when you keep stepping forward in that tango… that’s when things start falling into place. That’s when beautiful things start to happen and you find your rhythm.

That’s when you blossom.

When it’s hard, think of all the people in your life who ever doubted you or who may be doubting you now. The people who bullied you or misunderstood you or wronged you. Show them how wrong they are. Push through.

Think about everything you’ve been through in your life and how nothing has stopped you yet. Yes you’ve been knocked down, sometimes so hard you could barely move, but you got back up. Here you are and your life is right in front of you so reach out and grab it! You have no idea how many amazing things you can accomplish or how adaptable your body is…yet.

It’s time to start surprising yourself.

You have one life and one body and that’s a beautiful privilege. Be curious. See what that powerful brain and body can do. And make sure you are your own biggest fan, not your own heckler. Remind yourself that you are good enough now and you are only getting better…because that’s the truth.

You are good enough right now…and you are only getting better.

Don’t plan to be happy later. Don’t wait until you lose more weight, or get a better job, or buy a better house, or make enough money to start enjoying your life. Enjoy it now! Live it now! Show up now!

Your life is happening right now.

You’re moment is now.

You are good enough now…and you are only getting better.
