“Our chief want is someone who will inspire us to be what we know we could be.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
One of the main reasons Honest Small Group Training is one of the best places to workout in Portland is its amazing personal trainers! Each of them, hand-picked by our fearless leader Paisley, are highly qualified, knowledgable and supportive of every client they work with. While they all have professionalism and competence in common, their personalities are as unique as snowflakes. You’ll love them all! It’s time to take a look at what makes each of them tick…let’s get to know your trainers!
This month we are featuring the lovely Michelle Nixon, the brit who’ll get you fit! Michelle received her diploma from the National Personal Training Institute, and is Suspension Training and Kettlebell Certified. She is also the Fitness Director at Honest, and runs our monthly Honest Talk Series.
Here are a few things about Michelle that will make you love her even more!
What made you want to become a trainer?
After moving to America in 2001 I gained about 35lbs the first year and a half of living in NYC. It was mortifying, as weight had never been an issue for me. I did all the stereotypical things someone does when trying to lose weight, I tried The South Beach Diet, which was super popular at the time and it kind of worked but made me miserable. I joined a Weight Watchers group for the support but after 8 weeks I hadn’t lost a single pound and counting calories was too stress inducing.
I finally decided to join a gym, started running and strength training, and researching nutrition. I lost 5 lbs in the first few weeks and I knew I was on to something. In addition to eating healthy and exercising, I took a look at my life as a whole and realized there were big stressors that were road blocking my weight loss.
I spent the next 4 years studying to become a dietician. I was accepted into a Master’s program for Nutrition, but declined it to enroll into a personal training school. That was four years ago. I love that I can now help people on their fitness journeys!
What is your training philosophy?
I want people to know that personal training is so much more than six-pack abs. It is a lifestyle shift, from your sleeping and eating patterns, to hormones, living environment, work, stress, and personal relationships. It is about creating a fully functioning body, free from aches and pains. Every facet of your life affects your mind and body. The body is forgiving, it will tell you what it wants; it is our job to listen.
Also, I live by the 80/20 food rule. 80% healthy, 20% indulge-ish!
What are your favorite fitness activities?
Circuit training, hiking, running and dancing anywhere I can!
What is an interesting fact about you?
I lived on the East Coast for 8 years and was a server in Manhattan for 4 years while working on my photography, serving Matt Dillon, Kate Winslet, Ethan Hawke, and the SNL crew on a weekly basis!
