“There is more wisdom in your body than in your deepest philosophies.”
Each of the trainers at Honest Small Group Training put their heart into their work and continually strive to inspire and motivate their clients. They are the glue that binds the studio together and they are one of the main reasons people keep showing up. That’s why I like to take the time to share a little bit about each of them with all of you. I personally find each and every trainer at Honest inspiring in their own way. What an incredible and diverse group it is.
This week I’m shining the spotlight on Trainer Jared Kelsey!
Jared is a NASM Certified Personal Trainer with an additional TRX Group Certification. His workouts are awesome and his jovial energy is guaranteed to make you smile. He always keeps it fun and even shares a bonus science lesson at every circuit…did I mention he’s brilliant? Last and certainly not least, Jared is married to fellow trainer Keith Lewis and they are the most adorable couple you’ll ever meet.
So, let’s get to know Jared a little better and find out what makes him the amazing man he is.
What made you want to become a trainer?
It took me a long time and many college attempts to find a subject to study; something clicked one day and I realized that everything came back to biology. I jumped in after years of trying and got a degree studying a subject I had always loved. The more I studied, the more fascinated I became that our bodies are capable of so much even though they’re put together in such complex ways! In my last year of school, I signed Keith and I up to try out Honest. We clicked with Paisley’s style pretty immediately, and I began to see an opportunity for the practical application of my studies. I remember mentioning in passing to Paisley after an early morning workout that I had considered becoming a trainer and her response was “DO IT!”. Down the rabbit hole I went, and I’ve loved getting to share my excitement about how the body works while helping people find new and interesting ways to be physically engaged.
What is your training philosophy?
Movement is good for the body, but it’s even better for the mind and soul.
What are your favorite fitness activities?
I’m a huge fan of weight training, it’s pretty much my favorite go-to physical activity. I try to balance it out by being out in nature in the mountains or at the beach, but when it comes down to being active, nothing beats throwing weight around in the gym for me. I’m working on building, if not a passion for, an appreciation for running, but it’s a long, slow road ;).
Whats an interesting fact about you?
I have a chronic depressive disorder that is marked by intense anxiety. There are times when leaving the house becomes an insurmountable obstacle, and the prospect of being around other people results in a crippling panic. I have lived with the mental and physical exhaustion that are the hallmarks of this combination of disorders for years and have undergone a variety of treatment modalities to try to mitigate the effects with mixed results. The thing that seems to best keep my monsters at bay and shifts my ability to live in the world is exercise. No other treatment has had the positive results on my well-being and ability to just be the way that being physically active has. I’m such a fundamental believer in the positive effects of exercise on the mind that I named my personal training business “Per Corpus Ad Mentum”–“Through the Body, to the Mind”.
